Why do DSG gearboxes run at such low RPM during gentle driving?

Manufacturers calibrate DSG gearboxes so that cars achieve the lowest possible fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions in test cycles (WLTP and similar).

In real-world driving, however, slightly raising the operating RPM into a more comfortable range for both the engine and the driver does not increase fuel consumption, and it has a positive effect on drivability and component longevity.

By avoiding excessively low RPM, we reduce unpleasant vibrations and drivetrain shudder, helping protect components such as the dual-mass flywheel and driveshafts.

With this calibration you get:

- Better throttle response

- Improved drivability and smoothness

- Extended service life of the DSG gearbox itself
